no working Ctrl-Alt-Delete and alway working harddrive

First I have several virus checkers installed and was updating them
when after I updated about the last two I restarted my computer as I usually
do when I do this...when I got back to the desktop the hourglass kept
turning and the harddrive was sounding like it was working and the light was
blinking along with the harddrive. This lasted for about 10 minutes before
I had control again of the computer. Everything seemed fine but the
harddrive was still pulsing and light blinking.
Most of the time when I "first" start it up it starts normal but with the
working harddrive still going. If I restart the computer then that's when
the thing well usually sit there for the 10 or so minutes.
I have ran all virus checkers and nothing has helped, then turned off all
of them, still happens.

The other problem is with Ctrl-Alt-Delete, it only flashes on for a split
second but won't stay up.
Wanted to go in to see what was running and today it won't even come up at
all...just little green boxes on the task bar for every time I click for it.
I have downloaded up dates for my virus checkers many times and never had
one problem.
The checkers I have loaded are:
Antivirus XP
a2-StartCenter
-- Ad-Aware SE
Personal
AVG free
SpyBot
Spysweeper
AVG free and Spysweeper where the last two I updated
before the next restart and I have used AVG free longer than any of them and
had never had problems with it. Really I have NO problems with any of these
before either.
