ok.. well.. i had 256mb PC2700 RAM and decided to go right up and buy another
3 sticks of it to make a GB. All 4 sticks say PC2700 and fit into the memory
slots.

Now for some reason, my computer is not using these extra sticks of RAM no
matter which order or how many i put in, it always says i have 256mb. The
only time i have seen it say 1024mb is when i did a BIOS scan, and it also
said there was room for double that amount.

Well i dont have a clue about computers but its just like theres something
holding the computer back from using anything bigger than the 256mb which
makes my computer very slow

My CPU speed is 2793mhz and my graphics card is an NVIDIA GeForce 6200
512mb. So i think its just my RAM that is slowing my computer down especially
when playing any graphically challenging games.

Any help will be appreciated =) thanks

What steps did you take, before you purchased the RAM, to ensure that it was the correct RAM for your motherboard?

Use Start - Run - MSCONFIG
Go to the BOOT.INI tab and click on the "Advanced Options" button.
Make certain that the checkbox for the /MAXMEM= line is clear (click
on it to clear it if necessary) and that there is no value in the data
box for this line.
Click on Apply and OK as needed to exit.
Reboot the computer to put the changes (if you made any) into effect.

ok i went into msconfig and looked at the /maxmem option but it was already
unchecked so i guess it isnt that but thanks for trying.

errrm well i wrote down everything on the paper stuck to the inside of my pc
case and gave it to the man at the shop and he told me what i needed, it
said.. i think.. DDR DIMM pc2700 184 pin and all the ram i bought is that
same type.

right my motherboard.. i dont know how to find this out =/ i see something
that says P4 DDR SKT478 M45P8-MLF Motherboard but no manufacturers name. Can
anybody tell me where to find the name please?

well the RAM is all different makes, that doesnt matter does it? anyway i
looked on each 1 and all i could find was :

the first 1 was the one that came with the computer, it had nothing written
on it besides AFM™

the seconds make had an M for a symbol but no name.. and had PC2700U-2533-A1
256mb DDR 333 CL2.5 on it

the third is made by Elixir and had 256mb DDR 333mhz CL2.5 PC PC2700U-25330
on it

the forth is made by Elpida and had 256mb PC2700U-2533-O-A1 on it

hope this means something to you

When selecting RAM, you must use the exact RAM that is specified for your
computer. Fortunately, this is an easy task, since the major RAM
manufacturers all have RAM selectors at their web sites. See especially
Crucial Technology (www.crucial.com).

Failure to use the correct RAM will cause problems.

hmm but how can it be the wrong type of RAM if its exactly the same as the
origional stick that came with the computer? i went on that site and used 1
of the programs and it gave me this..

It clearly says DDR400 memory, whereas you seem to have something
different.

The compatible memory for your chipset is listed here:

However, take care as a lot listed are not DDR400.

Where did you buy the memory? Was it at a local computer shop or another
source? This could be important with regard to exchanging the unsuitable
memory for the correct memory.

You need to buy memory where you can get advice. Installing memory can
be a little hit and miss. It can be necessary to match memory. The last
time I bought extra memory some wasn't recognised so the supplier
swapped it for that supplied by another manufacturer.
