Default Problem with Searching folders on network drives

when attempting to search for files or folders (using the search function) on
some of my network drives, the search does not appear to visit all of the
requested locations.
the client can see the file server as you can browse to the files/folders ok
using explore.
has anyone experienced this or a similar problem?
