Hi everybody,
I'm running a standalone PC with WinXP Pro. About a month ago I wanted to change some user settings and resize a partition, but found that the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) didn't enter into author mode. It'll open the main console window with "local computer" and three branches but nothing more, and the help function doesn't run either. It seems author mode has been disallowed, most probably by a virus (Like most people I've been having attacks by viruses and the like but not very serious) I checked this link indicated by Wesley Vogel on this group on Oct 15: http://www.boyce.us/gp/gpcontent.asp?ID=571, and it suggests you check the following registry key: HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\MMC!RestrictAutho rMode It's not in my registry, but the text deals with older versions of Windows as well, so this could be one that isn't imncluded in the WinXP registry. If it should be there, what's the default value that gives me, but no other user, administrative rights on the MMC? I also found the following regkey a little further down: HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft Managemant Console\Settings. This one says "standard" , no value indicated. That's just as it should be, isn't it? Any other advice appreciated. /Martin, Sweden |

Martin,
If RestrictAuthorMode does not exist, it is the same as a 0 Value. The policy is disabled or not configured. Users can open the MMC in author mode. RestrictAuthorMode http://www.microsoft.com/resources/d...ntry/93793.asp I have XP Pro SP1a and I do not have this key... HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft Management Console\Settings Google never heard of... HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft Management Console\Settings or HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft Management Console\Settings There is this key however... HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft Management Console\Settings Mine has... Value Name: List Save Location Data Type: REG_SZ Value Data: C:\Documents and Settings\Wesley P. Vogel\Desktop -- Hope this helps. Let us know.
