Default System will only start in Safe Mode

I am using Windows XP SP2. On trying to start my computer today, it only
goes as far as the Windows XP Screen with the rectangular box in the
middle of the screen with groups of 3 blue dots rapidly moving from left
to right in the box. On rebooting a number of times, the blue dots seem
to stall after 11 or 12 sets have passed through and the computer then
'hangs' in that state, until I switch off.
I have done 3 System Restores using different restore points all to no
avail. I can boot up in Safe Mode without problem.

Has anyone any suggestion as to what might be the cause of this
malfunction?

Start in Safe Mode. then start with clean boot. if that clears the problem,
then one by one restore settings until computer starts to experince problems
again. then you have identified problem. fix problem.

Many thanks for your suggestion.

Strange thing though, I followed the instructions in KB310353 most
carefully, clearing the various check boxes etc. I then rebooted and, in
turn, rechecked all the boxes I had unchecked, re-booting each time, I
did not do anything else, so did not identify the original problem.
However the system now boots up and seems to be working fine.

If the problem re-occurs, I will follow the same procedure again and
hopefully will be able to identify what the problem is.

Thanks once again for your help, I do appreciate it..
