I have the same " 'Look in' drop down delay " problem with WinXP Pro, except
that my delay is approximately 5 seconds. I have this on two networked computers, both of which are 3 GHz machines (so the delay time, while much shorter than yours, is very long in comparison with the speed of the computers). Suggestions about how to fix this would be appreciated. -- Fred "WarPig" wrote: > Hi, > > I have a question regarding the performance of the 'Look in' Drop Down when > you select File|Open in i.e. MS Word, Excel, etc. Specifically, it takes > about 30 seconds to display the Drop Down each time you click it. After reading some of the other suggestions/responses here and other sites, I
found the fix: It looks like it's the refreshing of the folders that's causing the problem. Someone also suggested deleting ALL the mappings off of the XP PC but that did NOT work. Changing the registry settings did the trick. Here is the fix: From the website: http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm download the 2 .REG files: disablerefresh.reg (item 157. Prevent Automatic Folder and Icon Refresh) wia.reg (second item 157. Prevent Delay Opening My Computer/Explorer) and Double-Click them to update the registry. Reboot the computer and this will stop windows from trying to refresh images, etc. and stop the delays. Hope this works for you too... Michael --
It did not work for me. Thank you very much for the guidance. I DL'd the *.REG files you suggested and successfully used them to update the registry. Then, I rebooted. I encountered no problems, but the initial issue remains: File|Open|Look-in (clicking on the down-arrow of the "Look-in" window) results in a 5-second delay on a 3 GHz computer running WinXP Pro and networked to two other comparable computers, a printer, and the Internet. It's more of an annoyance than an operational problem, but I will keep looking for a resolution. -- Fred "WarPig" wrote: > After reading some of the other suggestions/responses here and other sites, I > found the fix: It looks like it's the refreshing of the folders that's > causing the problem.
