Default System Restore Problems

Every time I try to run system restore I get the message "System restore
Application has encountered a problem and needs to close etc... " System
Restore also fails to run in safe mode.

The Event Viewer shows the message:
Event Type: Information
Event Source: SRService
Event Category: None
Event ID: 107
Date: 28/11/2005
Time: 22:08:40
User: N/A
Computer: DESKTOP
Description:
The System Restore service has been suspended because there is not enough
disk space available on the drive
\\?\Volume{65581363-053a-11d7-bd5f-806d6172696f}\. System Restore will
automatically resume service once at least 200 MB of free disk space is
available on the system drive.
But I have 62 GB free on my system disk and 25 GB free on the other!

Also clicking the System Restore tab on My Computer/Properties leads to
another failure with "Run a DLL as an APP has encountered a problem and
neesds to close etc...
I'm running XPSP2.
Any help would be appreciated.

The 'standard' method of fixing System Restore (SR) problems are:

1. Check only the C drive, or the drive on which the OS is installed is
being monitored by SR
2. Turn off SR, reboot then turn SR back on for the C drive (see1)
3. If " does not fix problem then go to Windows\inf and find sr.inf.
Right click sr.inf and select to reinstall. This will reinstall SR.

If the above doesn't fix the problem and it may not then 'join the club'! I
have had the same problem for going on 12 months with no solution other than
reinstalling WINXP I suppose. In my opinion System Restore simply is not
worth using due to its flawed concept, that is each Restore point is
dependent upon the previous Restore Point such that a fault will cause the
loss of all Restore Points. I suggest you look into using ERUNT (freeware)

Thanks, but I've tried re-installing sr.inf. It proceeds so far and is then
unable to copy its required files even though they are on my pc in
windows\system32 and in windows\servicvepackfiles\i386. Looks like something
is seriously corrupt!

I should try running SFC /scannow to verify the 'health' of the WINXP file
system. It may help you to reinstall SR. However, if my experience and
that of others is a guide you won't be able to fix your problem without
reinstalling WINXP. I haven't tried to do a 'repair' but someone else who
had a similar problem told me they did but the problem remained.

I use ERUNT and GoBack, plus imaging; likely 'belt and braces and more',
but at least I know I can easily recover from a Registry problem.

Thanks, you've been a great help. Running SFC /scannow did not solve the
problem so I'll now follow your route and go for ERUNT or GoBack.

Hi,

The event log indecates there's a partition low on disk space. I would
suggest setting System Restore to only monitor the partition Window is
installed on.

Disable a monitored drive

Hi,

What happens when you browse to the needed files in the i386 folder
during the install process?
How to reinstall System Restore:

Here are some additional troubleshooting tips.

Hi
When I browse to the i386 folder the files are there but the SR reinstall
says it cannot copy them.
I can't disable SR on my second disk because clicking on the System Restore
tab of
My Computer/Properties gives the message "Run a DLL as an App has
encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the
inconvenience!" This sets off Dr Watson's debugger and it fails with the same
message.
(I've found your web site very useful and I've been working steadily through
your suggestions but with no success yet.)

Thanks!

Hi,

At this point I would suggest creating a Slipstream disk, and use it to
reinstall System Restore or perform a repair install.
