Have you tried entering "regedt32" in a command prompt? It is the same as
'regedit', but can handle some extra variables and functions exactly the same as "regedit". The "reg" command is there but I was referring to the directory (C:\Program
Files\Support Tools>reg query "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\ > >> Windows NT\CurrentVersion" /v SourcePath). C:\Program Files\Support Tools Support Tools are not normally installed during normal setup So how can this person execute this command? Why aren't you trying to remove drivers using update or rollback feature in
Device Manager? If your Cd drive isn't recognized or has a bad driver, it probaly won't read any cd let alone your XP CD. C:\Program Files\Support Tools> Is the *prompt* from David's cmd.exe.
If you have Windows Support Tools installed and open cmd.exe from C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Windows Support Tools the Command Prompt shortcut has "C:\Program Files\Support Tools\" in the Start in: box, i.e. the prompt. cmd.exe opened from %homepath%\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories usually has %HOMEDRIVE%%HOMEPATH% in the Start in: box. I have tried to update the driver via the device manager but it simply tells
me that I already have the best software installed. Should I delete the driver? Is there a place I can download a clean copy? Thanks again. Maybe you have virus or something.
have you tried System Restore? When did cd drive become corrupted? anything change? Maybe you should repost with new question. cd drive driver corrupted or cd read failure. then people can help you with that and every here can still work on "Why can't I use regedit?" New cd driver. got to cd mfg website or google for cd driver. there are also driver download sites. www.cnet.com ( might have downloads) www.drivershq.com , www.driversguide.com, and more like i said make new post for cd drive problem. it is to confusing to mix with this post.
