D Drive

My D drive has disappeared from "My Computer". I have tried to uninstall and
re-install it from device manager, but get an error message to the effect
that Windows is unable to start the hardware device because configuration
information (in the registry) is damaged or incomplete. Code 19. I tried
installing an external drive - but get the same result. I have also edited
the registry per MS article ID314060 (Q314060) and nothing changed. Is there
a new pc in my future??

That depends... What is your D: drive normally? Is it a hard disk or an
optical disk?

Try restarting the computer in Safe mode by pressing the F8 key during
StartUp and then select Last Known Good Configuration.

For that one you PROBABLY want to do it the hard way - with the registry
editing bit - on this page:

I think I've explained it well enough there but if not there's more help or
information available I am pretty sure. The first bit on the page is about a
utility by Doug Knox and I've never actually asked him if it removes the
upperfilters and lowerfilters. I suppose I should one of these days. Anyhow,
in this particular instance - with an error code of 19 - it's likely the
registry that needs editing. Follow the directions exactly and you should
not have any problems with it.

Thanks. I did try one bit of registry editing which was supposed to remove
the upper and lower filters; it didn't help. I'll look at your method and
try it too. At this point I don't have too much to lose?????

It's back! Evidently I didn't delete the right thing but now I think I did
it correctly because the drive is back and functioning. Thanks for your help.
