After clean installation I downloaded all updates for XP Pro, including SP2.
Problem: when I boot the PC it goes to where I can see the background, but
no icons or the taskbar appears. I restored it to the previous day, but tha
only works for a day and then its the same story.
Please help

Jo, wipe clean and start over. You should create a slipstreamed WinXP +
SP2 CD. To do that check here

To be of any help i will actually need a little bit of more information like
the date to which you restored your computer to was that before you installed
the sp2 and updates. In any case you may want try and boot your computer into
safe mode and check if the problem persists.
