Default the "fn (function" key

I just recently had my vaio VGN-FS550 fixed from a virus, and ever since
then, the "fn" key combinations will not work anymore, almost as if it is
de-activated. Can somebody tell me how to re-activate the "fn" key?

Check the laptop manufacturers web site for keyboard related drivers.

If it worked prior to the virus removal, but it hasn't worked since, might
it not be a good idea to return the unit to whoever removed the virus, and
ask them to fix it?..

You have somehow prevented startup apps, including the two Sony
proprietary handlers for keyboard functions. These are autostarted and
should be checked in msconfig, startup tab. Start, Run command, type:
msconfig [enter], and check the list of startup applications.
