Default Disabling msmsgs.exe from running

I have diabled Windows Messenger service from running through the Services
console+disabled it from the messenger's options as well. The process was not
appearing earlier but after the recent windows update, this process keeps on
running and hogs the memory. It restarts after it is manually stopped.
I searched the windows for the exe and found only this entry in Windows
Prefetch folder"MSMSGS.EXE-2B6052DE.pf".Any ideas how can I get rid of this
process. Thanx

Jake,
Stopping "Windows" Messenger is easy, if you happen to be using ZoneAlarm
Pro (I don't know if the same applies to the free ZoneAlarm).
Program Control I Programs Tab I Trust Level Column I left click opposite
Windows Messenger and select "Kill".
A dialog box will warn you that the program will not run again until ....
Select "Yes" and exit.
Probably "MSN" Messenger could be killed the same way.
Good luck!

Try this.

Open an Command Prompt (Start >> All Programs >> Accessories >> Command
Prompt )

Type "C:\Documents and Settings\zzz459a>RunDll32
advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%
\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove" and hit enter. This will remove Msn messenger
4.X (or Msmsgs.exe ) from your system.

This wil normaly fix your problem
I hope this helps u

The Windows Messenger service and Microsoft Messenger are two different
entities. Unfortunately Microsoft picked very similar names. One is a
service and one is a program. Which one is causing the problem? Does the
Messenger service restart or does the Messenger program restart? If it's the
program some of the other posts in the thread tell you how to stop it. If
it's the service it's likely some malware has infected your computer.

Msn Messenger is disabled and also I have disabled the service and it is not
running. But in Task Manager their is a process by the name msmsgs.exe which
is hogging a lot of memory. And it does not seem to quit even after manually
stopping it. Checked my pc with NORTON AV, SpyBot as well as Ad- Aware and
they have given it a clean bill. I searched the exe in Windows and found it
in Windows Prefetch directory. And yes it is not connecting to internet as I
have disabled all unnecessary internet connections thru Zone Alarm.I am not
sure what to do now.

Msmsgs.exe is yet another Microsoft program called Messenger. It is Windows
Messenger as opposed to MSN Messenger. You must disable it in Outlook
Express as well as running Windows Messenger itself and ticking off several
options there as well. I can't remember them all off the top of my head but
it's fairly obvious once you are on the right screen.

Merry Christmas, Kerry

Forgot to mention in my other post. Many viruses also use this name. Stop
the process and scan your computer again.

hey jake,
try this: open the registry editor by clicking on start->run and then type
in regedit and press enter.

what you have in front of you now is the windows registry editor. move with
complete caution because you can mess up your computer big time if you dont
follow the steps as mentioned.

Now scroll down to the HKey_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre nt
Version\Run and now on the right pane you should have a few entries. Check if
you have msmsgs entry there. If you do just right click on it and select
delete. If you dont then move on to the next step otherwise restart your
computer and check if you have that process running.

Now the next step if you dint find it in the previous step you are sure to
find t here. In the registry editor now you need to go to
HKey_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run. Check here
you will find it. Just right click on it and select delete.

That's it!!

Now restart your system to check if you have that process running.

Do tell me if this helps

Just skipped this part. To disable it from Outlook Express follow these steps:
1>Open OE and then click on tools menu->then choose the options option.
2>Now on the general tab you will have an option that says Automatically log
on to windows messenger. Just uncheck that and then restart your computer.
You should not have it running around anymore. But if you still do just end
it and it will not restart.

Hope this helps
