can not connect Canon IXUS 40 to my XP home

Hi all
my brother has bought a camera Canon ixus40 . I connected it to the usb port
of the Dell laptop XP home SR2 and installed the delivered canon sw> no
transfer.
I de-installed the sw and tried with the standard xp driver> when connecting
the camera, the camera icon named "canon ixus" pops up in the control panel/
camera screen>>> so xp sees the camera; however no transfer; when i click on
the icon and select "acquire pictures", i get a message that a camera window
is open already. I downloaded the latest WIA driver from Canon, installed
it... same result.
When i start up the driver-delivered "explorer sw" and acquire pics.... got
the message: "connect your camera or switch it on !"
When i go to control panel/system/hardware/device manager and select the
camera ... it shows in the general TAB "working fine"; the driver indicates
the latest version 6.4.0
The USB ports of the pc work fine with a memory stick.
What could be blocking the camera connection?
The camera connected to my own xp pc works fine, no problem with cables or
camera !
I runned all kinds of antispyware; no luck either

Canon, at one time, placed a yellow user notice in the top of the boxes
for all of their cameras that said "Canon software and drivers must be
installed before the camera is connected to the computer the first
time".

If this is the requirement for the Ixus, as I suspect it is, then you
should connect the camera and then remove anything in device manager
pointing to the camera, uninstall all Canon software from Add/Remove
programs, then shut down (with the camera attached). When shut down,
disconnect the camera, restart, install the software, then connect the
camera.

thanks again for your tips; i tried them out ,but none of them solved the
problem.
I did not find the cause, but managed to bypass the result:
-i connect the camera, after some seconds, a little popup windows lets me
select the camera type (only the canon is shown)
-at that moment i don't select, but switch the camera off
-i switch the camera on again and i get the error window that "a camera
window is open already"
-i click on the OK to close this erro window
-now i click on the "OK" in the camera selection window that was still open
-after some seconds, the driver download window appears and lets me select
different download possibilities .....and it works

Hi Quaoar
thanks again for your tip; indeed, i followed this procedure at
installation, but downloading did not work

I did not find the cause, but managed to bypass the result:
-i connect the camera, after some seconds, a little popup windows lets me
select the camera type (only the canon is shown)
-at that moment i don't select, but switch the camera off
-i switch the camera on again and i get the error window that "a camera
window is open already"
-i click on the OK to close this erro window
-now i click on the "OK" in the camera selection window that was still open
-after some seconds, the driver download window appears and lets me select
different download possibilities .....and it works
