I downloaded SyncToy a couple of days ago to see if it would make life any
eaiser but what happenes when I changed just the name of 12 folders in My Pictures on my desktop, then ran SyncToy with the Echo action but instead of just doing the same thing to the 12 folders on the external hard drive it makes new ones and leaves the empty originals. Perhaps Im missing something having only a basic knowlage of computers?. If I have to go back into the external drive and delete all these empty folders my self its eaiser to just backup my photos manually. Can SyncToy not just mirror what I do on my desktop to the external hard drive? otherwise Im going to have a real mess of empty folders. Perhaps SyncToy is not designed for this task? Any help or sugestions greatly appreciated, many thanks ....... -- ****** arby ****** |

I also use the Echo option. I've had great success using SyncToy in this manner, and don't have any suggestions for Arby. Just letting you know it works great, you should try again. I found that I needed to create a folder on my external hard drive first, then have my backups go to that named folder. Otherwise, my backup files were scattered everywhere on the external drive. I also am trying to find out how to set my computer to do automatic backups to my external hard drive. I put the -R in the command line like the instructions said to do, but it doesn't work. I have this typed into the "run" box: "C:\Documents\Personal\Start menu\Programs\SyncToy.lnk" -R and this typed into the "run in" box: G:\ (G is my external drive) I want to schedule all Folder Pairs to back up automatically. Can anyone give me advice to make the automatic backup work? Thanks |

I wished I could help you Piney but my computer knowlege is very basic and I
haven't even tried to set up a schedule yet. I am finding SyncToy very usefull too and have it set up between my laptop and my desktop computer and its working fine. I also had it set to backup My Documents to an External Hard Drive which it did very well but it was just that when I run SyncToy it will delete any files I want deleted but not the folder they were in that has me wondering...it says in the 'Help' that...."Note: SyncToy does not delete folders". There is probably a good reason for this and I was wondering what it might be? You should probably search for "folders" in the "Expert Zone Newsgroups" to see if someone already asked/answered this question. If you don't find your answer there, post a question about folders. Sorry, I don't know the answer to your question. But SyncToy is sure a lot faster than Nero BackItUp. It backups in half the time! |
