I've read thru some of the past posts on this subject and still not helping
with my issue.

I have a Windows XP Home system on my PC. It is new and is already loaded
with Windows Media Player ver 10.

I've also installed ActiveX runtime ver 9 on the PC -- I vaguely remember
this component is needed to run PS3 so I installed it.

I downloaded PS3, which is 5MB file, double-click on it, a dialog box
appears saying something like "preparing to install". After about 5-seconds,
the dialog box disappears, and then nothing happens. I wait and wait for a
long time, still nothing. Task manager (pressing Alt-Ctrl-Del) doesn't show
any PS3 process going on.

The problem is when I try to shut my PC down. After clicking "Shut down",
the PC appears to be doing nothing. If I leave it alone, after 10 minutes,
the PC will eventually shut down on its own. So I suspect the PS3 installer
must be hogging the system resource in some ways to be slowing it down.

Any suggestion what I can do? Could the ActiveX 9 be the cause of the
problem? I cannot find it in "Remove software" dialog box, so I don't even
know how to uninstall ActiveX 9. Thanks in advance for help!

You may have a temp folder stuffed with files.
Go to Start/Run and type in %temp% When the folder appears, delete all the
contents that it will allow you to. Then check with
Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs and see if PS3 is there. If so delete
it and start over again. You MAY also have some spyware or adware. Have a
cleanout with AdAware and Spybot.
