i can't save any pictures that have the percent sign (%) as part of the label
(name of the picture). why? can the name be changed so i can save it?

You've got me thinking here Ralph. Why?

Well some programs will indeed allow for details to be added to an image
at the print out stage. %F for filename %D for date and so on. But
they don't (usually) allow images to be saved as such.

On the other hand most programs also have a text tool that will allow
text to be types in such as a filename but this lacks auto-updates such
as changing the filename means going in and amending the Text box on the
image (assuming it can be edited at all).

And a third factor?
When viewing images onscreen usually the filename appears anyway.

maybe I am missing some crucial details?

Perhaps % is a reserved character (i. e. cannot be part of a file name)
because the environment variable all contain %.

IrfanView (free for non-commercial use) uses a %D, %F ... user optional
variable in headers & footers to allow for stuff to be printed.

I haven't checked PiT yet to see if the feature is there.

however, from a consumers point of view it does seem a rather handy live
effect in a photo editor IMO

thanks for answering, deebs. i'm not sure i understand your answer. if
those photos come up blank, maybe there is a way to change the title and
leave out the % sign? or if it's not possible to change the title, maybe
there's another way to convert the photo.

It won't do any harm to try (it is free for non-commercial use)

Where it differs from your request is that File > Print leads to a
dialogue box allows %D, %F and quite a few other details to be added to
the print out.

they will appear in the printout

a filename to an image but I guess it may be tricky to do.

What if, for example, size 48 font is used then the image is resized?
(A rasterised version of the filename on the image would be neat)

Then suppose the filename is change - the old filename is now embedded
into the image. See the conundrum?

Maybe there is such a thing as a relative font size?

Change image size by -50% and the font/filename also changes by -50%?
