SyncToy missed files

I have been using the free (limited usage) version of Allway Sync for some
time now. I came across Sync Toy last week and thought I'd give it a shot. I
decided to test it by synchronizing dta on an old drive to a folder on my
computer. I connected the old drive using an external USB drive case (easy
enough), and then set up the sync. I had 44,845 files, in a variety of
folders.

After running Sync Toy (with the default settings) I checked the properties
of the folders - and they were different:

Original data -
Size on disk - 45.5 GB (48,916,742,144 bytes) - 41,870 files - 2,984 folders

Synced data -
Size on Disk - 45.5 GB (48,916,295,680 bytes) - 41,863 files - 2,901 folders

Note that this indicates 7 files and 83 folders - 90 items in total

I ran SyncToy a second time, and it reported there were no differences, and
did not make any changes

Then I ran an "analysis" with Allway Sync (using the default settings). It
indicated 90 files and folders that were not copied. I checked several of
them (using 2xExplorer), and found that Allway Sync was correct.

Further checking indicated that the folders that were not copied were empty
- contained no files.

I checked one of the files - a .GIF file, which indicated a Size on Disk of
8.00 KB (8,192 bytes).

The fact that Sync Toy does not copy empty folders may not be a huge issue
for some (it's a concern for me - sync means EVERYTHING, empty or not), but
the fact that it missed files certainly is. I think I'll keep on using my
"xcopy" batch files, and Allway Sync. It may be more time consuming, but I
believe it is also safer, and that's more important to me. I'd rather spend a
little more time doing the job, and know that my data is secure.

I hope this information will help the developers of Sync Toy. A
synchronizing tool should not make decisions on what it will and will not
sync. It should copy every file and folder, even if it is a "zero" bit file,
or an empty folder. If it exists, it should be copied.

I also read a number of posts where PST files were lost, or corrupted, after
using Sync Toy (SyncToy Disaster thread). George Goley indicated that SyncToy
cannot copy a file that is in use (PST file). This is also the case with
Allway Sync. However, with Allway Sync, the copy process will simply fail if
the file is in use. The original file will remain unchanged, and the "copied"
file (the backup) will fail. No data lost, but no backup made either.
Unfortunately Allway Sync will also delete the backup file if it already
exists, so it is not perfect, but at least I don't lose any data.
