I can't get my computer to recognize my canon camera. I'm running windows XP
with SP2. I've tried downloading the software 3 or 4 times all with the same
results. The twits at the camera store says it's a problem with the
computer.

I use a SD Card reader with my S2 IS and
have no problems. I never even installed the
software that came with the camera.

You should not need the software that came with your camera anyway. It's
usually of poor design and tries to take over your computer. I would
concentrate on the 'install new hardware wizard ' in XP until the camera's
memory card comes up as an aditional drive under My Computer. It always does
in the end.
Stuff the Canon CD (or any make of digital for that matter)

Why do they do that with software?

It is not just cameras, some GPS units try to do the same.

It doesn't seem professional making proprietary software try to take
over a privately owned computer (and such should always be accompanied
with good and easy support if required). maybe we should wait for
someone in texas to tell the authorities? Remember Sony and rootkit?

Thanks for the suggestion, I tried to go through the "add new hardware but
wasn't quite sure what to tell the computer I was installing. The camera
isn't listed in imaging devices.

You will have to make it find it. It will eventually come up with 'Found new
hardware' Go into Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager/Universal
Serial Bus Controllers and jerk it about a bit.

Make sure YOU are in chrage of the darned computer, not it in charge of
you... :-)

On the other hand I don't think I have any strong need to use
proprietary software.

There is a speed advantage favoring transfer of data from a card reader
as opposed to through the camera itself. Plus the additional advantage
in my opinion that the camera is not tied up or out of action provided 2
or more memory cards are available

Thanks for all your help guys. As it turns out there was something wrong
with the camera, not the software or the computer or the guy trying to
install the darn thing. I exchanged it for a new one and I'm in business.
