Default Preview not available, still

On allot of my photos, (all JPEG), but not all JPEG I cannot open or view
these photos in any program. I do not have AOL/CS, and have tried the Run,
REGSERV32 suggestion. No joy. This also happened to me in mid November. All
still have .jpg or .jpeg with them. I'm lost, I have tried recovery programs
on misc. pics, and it says they are fine, no corrpution. Does anybody have
another suggestion?

In fact it ALL happened right after I installed update KB896424. I'm not sure
if this is the full reason, since I cannot remove it to test.

Are you DJ? If you are, please stick
with the same name as long as we
are discussing the same issue..

Where, exactly are these files saved?
My Pictures? E-mail messages?

If you are having problems opening images
in e-mail...and if you are using Outlook
Express...try the following:

Open OE and go to...Tools / Options / Security...
Uncheck..."Do not allow attachments, etc."
Uncheck..."Block Images, etc."
Apply / OK...

Have you tried opening these files on a
different computer? Did they open successfully?

I doubt that the KB896424 security update
had anything to do with it.

There is a registry patch at the link below
that *might* solve your problem...no promises!

Read the following articles about editing
your registry before proceeding:

Information About Editing the Registry

(322756) How to back up, edit, and restore
the registry in Windows XP and Windows
Server 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756

Scroll down to #17 right column:
"Restore Thumbnail Views In XP":
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

If you decide to try it, let us know the result.

No I am not DJ

They do not work on any comp if copied to a disc or viewed via ethernet
connection on a seperate comp.

They are on a slave HD on my PC in a dedicated photo file folder with over
20000 photos. It is very random at which are not viewable. Sometimes whole
sub-folders are bad, some folders are okay, some are good and bad. Age (0-5
years)of file does not matter except in the fact 100% of the phtos taken with
a newer camera are fine (about 3-4K photos)

Check that, some photos even with newer camera are bad. I tried those

Ooops...Sorry. When you said "Still"
I thought it was a continuation of the
same issue.

If the files are not viewable on your PC,
or any other PC...in any type of editing
software...they are apparently corrupted.

This is certainly a good example of why
archiving images on external media is
so important.

Maybe software of the type at the following
link could recover them...maybe not. Might
be worth a try.

PC Inspector File Recovery
http://tinyurl.com/70lc

Also might be worth a try to Google for
image recovery options.

Yes they do appear to be corrupt. Those programs did not work, and does not
ID them as corrupt. I have now brought the HD to a comp service fo more
intense recovery. If that does not work, my last option will be a very
expensive clean room recovery.

The shop I brought the HD too is very optimistic on recovering them since
they can bee seen by any OS. Hope they are right.

One more thing, this was my external archieve media. This was a removeable
slave drive. This should not have happened.

FWIW...when I said "External Media"
I meant...CDs, DVDs, etc.

I hope you are able to recover your files.
