Yesterday I tried installing an HP All-in-One on my XP Pro box -- this was
the first time I've tried installing any printer on it since I got my Dell PC since the summer. The installation has failed every single time. I noticed that my Print Spooler service wasn't running so I started it. If it wasn't already set to Automatic, I made it start Automatically. What I noticed was the Print Spooler service kept on stopping even after I restarted it. I assume this is why the installation is failing. Again, this was the first time I've tried installing any printers on the box. So why does my Print Spooler service stop all of the time? I've installed this printer on a Windows 2000 Advanced Server box without issue in the past. |

The printer spooler stopping is usually a good sign of corrupted drivers.

Cari,
No luck. Ran cleanspl.exe from the Tool Kit and restarted the machine only to have it boot up with the Printer Spooler service not started even though it's set to start automatically. Did you install the accompanying software BEFORE connecting the
all-in-one printer to the PC? While installing the software, it will tell you when to connect it and also when to turn it on. You may now have to start from scratch. Uninstall & reinstall Printer http://www.coribright.com/windows/Article%20One.htm -- XP-WNP Today is the first day of the rest of your life. If this post was helpful, please rate it. I've started from scratch a few times, including just now. I decided not to
connect and turn on the printer until the very end. After doing so, it detects the printer but fails during the "found new hardware wizard" as a result of the "RPC server is unavailable". I know the RPC and RPC Locator services are running and do so upon start up. So what's going on? In any event, after uninstalling everything, my Print Spool service still terminates unexpectedly and restarts itself only to do the same thing over and over again I think.
