I've read how this all in one has problems with drivers, specifically
scanning.
It installs the printer when I connect it, and I can see it as the
default printer, but when HP director is running and I go to scan
picture an error msg comes up- "error communicating with device. please
ensure that the device is connected properly"
what is up???

That error means that the TWAIN drivers for the scanner are not installed.
You probably connected the unit to the PC BEFORE installing the software.
When installing all-in-one units, you must insert the installation CD first,
and during the installation it will tell you when to connect it and when to
power it on. Start from scratch.
