Cannot be done! Even printing only black documents still requires the
use of the color cartridges. There is one possibility that you can try, but
may not work, is to print in Gray scale, some units will print but many will
not.
If not, buy a color cartridge to solve it.

Every modern inkjet printer I know of ceases to print when any
one of its ink cartridges expires. You must replace the expired
cartridge(s) in every case to resume printing. Why this is for
black printing is beyond me. I don't understand why color
cartridges are used when printing black text only but that's the
way it is. It's the printer manufactuer's way of ensuring you'll
be joining the rest of us at the ink cartridge shelves.

The addition of Magenta makes the black look 'blacker'.

Thanks for the explanation, Cari.

Could live without the "blacker" black in order to
save on magenta ink, and to be able to use only
the black cartridge when printing text-only documents.
Oh, well. It's not going to happen... (Smile.)

Today new laser printers are unbelievably cheap. I got a Konica-Minolta
laser printer for $100 and I think that included shipping. It came with a
"starter" toner cartridge which will do me quite a while. A new cartridge is
probably 1.5 to 2 times the cost of many inkjet cartridges.

Colour lasers are within the reach of home users now too. Probably part of
the reason why black lasers are so cheap. I learned my lesson with my first
(and last) inkjet printer. Never again would I buy those grossly overpriced
inks. Not many people really need colour; I know what it's like... print a
colour picture and you think.... Hmmmm... just a few changes and I bet it'll
look better yet. Before long I've used up half a cartridge on
experimentation! Maybe I was just weak.
