Default Can't Install Printer after installing Windows XP SP2

I need help from whoever can help. I have been to many different forums, on
all different companies to get help. So I am turning to you all in hopes you
have experiences this problem or know how to fix it.

First off I have Dell Dimension 8100. My hard drive crashed and I had to
replace the whole thing. I purchased a retail full version of Windows XP SP2
and installed it my new hard drive. Ever since then I can not install any
printer on the computer.

Details of what I did and my problem.
-Hard Drive crashed, purchased and installed a new one
-Installed a full version Windows XP SP2 (new purchase, since before I only
had an upgrade)
-Tried to install USB printer (tried multiple printers), when I plug in the
printer it recongnizes the type of printer, then it shows copying the files
to install the driver, then at the end it closes and says "there was a
problem installing your printer, it may not work properly"
-The printer does not show up in the control panel under printers
-Downloaded the latest drivers for both printers to ensure I had the latest
version.
-Still same problem
-Uprgaded BIOS Version to XP2, the latest version
-Still same problem
-Did an Upgrade (repair) of Windows XP SP2 hoping that would solve it.
-STILL SAME PROBLEM

So any ideas?

Thanks,
Rich

The driver it is trying to install may not support Windows XP Service Pack
2.

It may not even support Windows XP at all, but this is less likely because
it would mean you would have had to install the driver from a third party
source.

Waht make/model of printer is it.

Your best bet is to probably read about compatibility on the manufacturer's
web site and download the newest driver available that is specifically made
for Windows XP.

Paul,
I forgot to mention I have a laptop with Windows XP SP2 installed on it
and both printers work fine on that. The printers are a Lexmark X73 and a
Dell 720.

Did you install the software BEFORE connecting the printer to the PC?
If not, you'll have to start all over again. Do not connect the printer
untill prompted to do so and do not turn it on either till prompted.

I did install the software before connecting the printer to the PC. I
downloaded the latest drive from the manufacturer website. And like I said
previously I had no problem installing the printer on my laptop. The weird
thing is after I try to install it nothing ever appears in the printers
folder, I would have thought even if it installed incorrectly it would appear
in that folder, but nothing.

Both of these printers are manufactured by Lexmark and you are maybe getting
the 1068 error (even though you do not mention it)...

Follow steps 15 through 17 at Bruce Sanderson's website:
