I have a WXPP SP2 machine where users can print to the network printers
through the server, but cannot print to the local HP DeskJet 6122 connected via the parallel cable and LPT1. I as the Administrator can print fine, but regular users click print, it shows in the the queue for a split second, then disappears as if it went to the print device (though the print device doesn't act like anything was sent to it). If I bumped the user's rights to admin level, they then can print fine. I set the security settings on the printer to allow the Users group all access (I checked all three boxes to try it out) but that does nothing. Any ideas anyone? |

It looks as if you are up on setting rights/permissions, but since we had a
similar sounding 'Administrators only' hassle with our HP3330mfp all in one, perhaps this might help: After much perusal of these columns and reading around I found that I could not get at security settings for programme files because XP defaults include 'simple file sharing' which when enabled hides the Security tabs on Properties sheets. Once these had been unhidden by deselecting sfs it turned out that all the HP programmes had been set up for use by Administrators and Power Users only, but there was no Power Users group on our set up or user account options, so no 'Users' could use the full range of the HP device until the power users permissions had been also given to the users. However, we had found that this problem had not stopped users from sending items to the printer function itself: it was only adjusting the printer defaults and accessing the scanner; fax; and copier functions that were denied. So it looks as though the printer proper uses some different way of screening users to the rest of the HP device. They have not been able to explain this to me nor did they know about the problem with their 'Power Users' factory default stopping access for normal users. We are now able to let all users use appropriate settings and functions of the HP device, but still have the glitch that it will only allow one user/administrator to be logged on at a time so it has to be switched on and off each time 'fast user switching' is used - which rather spoils the effect!
