Default Fooling usb port to print to LPT

I am using XP Pro SP2 with all patches. I have an old cobalt program which
does not recognize USB printer port, it only recognizes LPT1. On the network
I can make it print to a network printer by using the NET USE command.
However, we bought a new local USB printer and it will not print to the USB
port. I know I have to fool the program by directing it to the LPT1 Port and
then from there threw the USB port. I have tried NET USE LPT1: (then the USB
port name) but it did not work. Does anyone know how to redirect a print job
to the LPT1 then threw the USB port?

net use is the way to go. Only admin users can net use LPT1. Make sure the
printer is shared and net use the \\computername\printsharename rather than
the USB00x port name.

good suggestions here. This issue is not uncommon.
