Default Systems slow down to a crawl after parallel printer is attached

I have two systems running Windows XP sp2. Both are Dell Optiplex GX260, with
freshly reloaded XP installation on both. On either computer they both run
great until a local laser printer is attached to the parallel port. One is an
HP LaserJet 4000n, and the other is a HP LaserJet 8000. We can watch the CPU
usage chart in taskmanager, and it peaks out the processor until the parallel
printer is taken off the system, and then it goes back to normal usage levels.
