Lexmark X1185 "unknown print monitor" on Windows XP

UGGG! I'm running Windows XP and cannot install the Lexmark X1185 All in one
printer/scanner/fax even after installing/uninstalling both the drivers on
the cd and updating with the drivers from the Lexmark website. The scanner
would install but the printer would not - I kept getting the "unknown print
monitor" message.
I then changed the .inf files for the language monitor as directed here:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=870666
This did finally allow me to add the printer and software, but I still
cannot print.
I now get the error message that the printer and computer "cannot
communicate".
I am connected to the printer thru virtual printer port USB001.
Can anyone help with this??

Try a complete uninstall:
