There is currently only the "owner" account on the system, so I assume I am
an administrator. However, wierder things have happened in the XP world. Is
there some way to check to be absolutely sure?

If you can install programs, you are an Administrator.

At this stage, I'd probably perform a Repair Installation to make sure you
don't have something 'nasty' on there.
