A lot of my users on a random basis complain that when they logon they
receive a message that their profile can not be accessed and the system will load a temporary profile. Now there are extenuating circumstances that lead to this predicament. The gist of this question is to find out exactly what Windows may be doing. What we have done with our users is migrated them from one domain to another. The steps we have followed are as such: 1. Via trust assign full control permission to new domain user (Win 2k3) to old domain (NT4.0) users profile folder (doc and settings). In addition, go inside of advanced permissions and check the box to "replace permission entries on all child objects with entries shown here that apply to child objects 2. Inside registry, load hive of old domain users profile (ntuser.dat file). Apply full control permission to new domain user’s account. In addition, go inside of advanced permissions and check the box to "replace permission entries on all child objects with entries shown here that apply to child objects 3. Join the Computer to new domain 4. Log off (not a restart) 5. Log in as new user on new domain 6. Log off 7. Log in as admin on new domain 8. Edit profile registry key on new user to point to old profile folder 9. Log on as new user and continue configuring the computer Out of 90 something users, only a handful have complained of the profile error they receive. On most occasions a restart seems to solve the problem, but the situation will reappear after a few weeks. In some cases, a permanent backup profile will be created and unless you go back into the registry to point the new profile to the older profile folder, it will never revert. Another thing to note is that in some cases, the user had admin privileges before the migration, and after the migration they were downgraded to power users, but, even if they have admin privileges, the problem still seems to occur. Any ideas? |
