If this is XP Home, start the machine in Safe Mode by repeatedly tapping the F8 key as the computer is starting up. This will get you to the right menu to choose Safe Mode. Use your Up arrow key to navigate; the mouse doesn't work here. Now you should see the Welcome Screen with the normally hidden built-in Administrator account. Unless you changed it, the default password is a blank. Log in with this account and go to the User Accounts applet in Control Panel. Change the administrative user account's password to something you will remember. If you have XP Pro, you don't need to start in Safe Mode to access the normally hidden Administrator account. Do Ctrl-Alt-Del twice and you'll get the classic logon box where you can type in "Administrator". If you have XP Pro and/or your daughter changed the password of the built-in Administrator account, use NTpasswd to change the Administrator password to a blank. Then log in and make your user account changes. http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/ Malke -- MS-MVP Windows User/Shell Elephant Boy Computers www.elephantboycomputers.com "Don't Panic" |

With physical access plus skills plus tools plus time, any computer running any operating system can be gotten into. This is the way all computers work and is not operating system-dependent. Jim
You should be thankful that it is so easy.. with some IBM laptops, if you forget the BIOS password, the entire board has to be replaced.. somehow, I don't think that you would like that kind of cost in the circumstances.. As with any security system, it is designed to prevent the 'casual' criminal.. align it to car security.. a good car lock system will take five minutes or more to penetrate, but some take less than 20 seconds.. -- Mike Hall MVP - Windows Shell/User "Jim" <null@null.com> wrote in message news:QqTff.8340$qw.8259@fed1read07... > LOL, so much for Windows security ![]() > > Jim > > > "Malke" <notreally@invalid.com> wrote in message > news:ufnkzUV7FHA.1184@TK2MSFTNGP12.phx.gbl... >> athiel@shaw.ca wrote: >> >> > Hello, My Daughter has forgotten the password she put into the admin >> > account.
