Insufficiant Priviledges (Two programs now...)

I currently use iTunes and play City of Villians/Heros. Lately, I've been
having some issues with these two programs. Whenever I start iTunes, it
comes up with an error message that reads: iTunes has detected that it is not
the default player for audio files. Do you want to make iTunes the default
player for audio files?

I then click "Yes" and get this response: An error occured while updating
the default player for audio file types. You do not have enough access
priviledges for this operation. I'm then forced to click "ok".

The program runs flawlessly besides that. It plays music, rips and burns
fine, downloads and everything. It's frustrating. I lived with it until
recently when I purchased City of Villians.

During the installation screen, I was continually getting messages along the
lines of: checksum failed on XXXX/XXXX (various different files). Click ok to
do a full checksum of all files. It then says: You may be out of disk space
or you may be trying to install to a location where you have insufficient
permissions.


Ok, so the same type of error for two seperate programs. I am logged in as
my admin account, and have been since I first installed WindowsXP Pro. I've
gone through the user settings and everything appears to be running properly.


Can anyone suggest a fix? Thanks.

Sounds like your security settings and/or permissions have become restricted
somehow for administrator or administrators. See the link below on how to
use secedit command at the command prompt to reset security to default
defined levels. --- Steve

Mr. Umbach,

Thank you kindly for that reply. That fixed iTunes problems immediately and
I'm checking the other program now! Would you be able to suggest some
reasons as to how the settings were altered in the first place? I'd like
this to not happen in the future.

Secondly, where do you find out about information on things like "secedit",
etc? I'm very much interested in learning how to fix problems myself.

It is hard to say exactly what happened. Usually what happens is the user
changes permissions/security settings [or installs a security template]
without understanding the ramifications, the user installs a program that
does such as some of the internet protection/spyware programs have a
"protection" mode that will restrict even the administrators and some of
these programs do not do a good job of warning the user of this, or
malware/spyware has done such. To learn more about the operating system you
may want to purchase a good book on Windows XP. You might want to go to your
local big bookstore to browse the different books on Windows XP to find one
that you are comfortable with as books can either start with the assumption
the users is a total beginner or an advanced user or somewhere in between.
The book below is big but a pretty good book and you don't have to read the
whole thing to learn a lot - just those chapters that interest you. There
are also some great internet resources as shown in the other links and
always try searching Google for a brief description of any problem your are
trying to troubleshoot. --- Steve
