Because the administrator is much too busy to bother with trivial tasks like defrag. If tweakui is used to enable "optimize hard drive when idle" is that the same as defraging? Will it still happen it the user is not Administrator? |

Often users waste more time defragmenting an NTFS volume then they lose due to any fragmentation. If you want a defragmenter to run under administrator privileges but don't want normal users to know your password (and they should also not run admin functions) then get a defragmenter that runs as an NT service. It will then run when it is appropriate, when the system is idle, and won't have the user farking over the machine with a defrag that they may very well interrupt, even by hitting the power switch. -- __________________________________________________ Post replies to the newsgroup - Share with others. Click Start, Run and enter GPEDIT.MSC Go to Local Computer Policy, Computer Configuration, Windows Settings, Security Settings, Local Policies, User Rights Assignment. In the right pane, look for Perform volume maintenance tasks. Double click this and add the user or Group that you want to have this privilege. A reboot may be required.

I added Power Users to "Perform volume maintenance tasks" and
re-booted but still got a warning, "You must have Administrator privileges to defragment a volume" So I tried adding Users, Everyone, and the specific user and rebooted. Same results. I don't believe so but you can use the XP command line version defrag.exe in
startup/shutdown scripts or as a Scheduled Task which can be scripted via schtasks. The links below explain more. --- Steve http://support.microsoft.com/kb/283080/EN-US/ http://technet2.microsoft.com/Window...68d171033.mspx "Russ Ringer" <nobody@example.com> wrote in message news:dm6eq1t2j2ojvav0pq93o0d2jh1vabkuqi@4ax.com... > Is there a way I can allow an account that is not a member of > Administrators to run disk defrag? > > Win XP pro SP2 > > Thanks, > Russ |

They may not be able to run the Command line version, but have you tried running the GUI version from the drives context menu?
