I am using the latest version of XP Home. I was adminsitrator with a
password. I put all my personal photos in My documents folder. Then I had a system crash. could not get the c drive to boot. So I loaded new version of xp home on drive d and I can now see all the files on drive c. BUT, I cannot get into the My documents folder to retrieve my photos because I am not the logged in as the administrator for drive c. I am running from administrator on drive d. My wife will KILL me if I cannot retrieve the family photos. Any help would be appreciated. I avoided writing a clean version of XP onto the drive c because I am afraid the old my documents folder will be written over and destroyed. If I can solve this it will make a great Christmas present for my wife. Thanks, peterchurNOSPAM@comcast.net |

(snip) Don't panic, all you need to do is take ownership of the files. You are in luck. You just need to "take ownership" of the folder being sure
to select the option to replace ownership on all subcontainers and objects and then grant yourself full control access to the folder. The two links below explain in more detail. As a warning for other users with XP Pro that if the files were encrypted by EFS you probably would loose permanent access to them doing such a reinstall but XP Home does not have EFS file encryption capability. --- Steve http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;308421 http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;308418 "peterchur" <peterchur@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:E89649E2-C768-4064-AEA5-7046ED314EB7@microsoft.com... >I am using the latest version of XP Home. FANTASTIC!! Steve and Malke, that was soooo easy. and it worked perfectly! I
am so impressed and gratelful. I am going put this site in my favorites, right at the top. Thanks, again. So, now that I have all of my important files off the C disk, To improve performance, should I reinstall XP home on the c drive and use it only for the operating system and put all my folders on the D drive? I store a lot of movie files. Peter "Steven L Umbach" wrote: > You are in luck. I store a lot of movie files. I'm so glad that solved the issue for you. I appreciate that you took the time to post back. To answer your question, it is a great idea to install your operating system and program files on one partition and your data on a second partition, or even a second hard drive. As for making this "site" one of your favorites, do yourself a good turn and access these newsgroups with a real newsreader. You'll get so much more out of this valuable resource. Here's information to help you with that: Since you are using the web interface, you may not realize that this is really a newsgroup. You will get far more out of this resource if you learn to use a newsreader. There are many good newsreaders for Windows, but you can use Outlook Express since you already have it.
