popup and security

I have Ad-Aware, AVG Free and Microsoft AntiSpyware. Is there a way to stop
the junk from coming onto my computer? I have popup blocker checked on the
internet options, but everytime I go check it out, the check is removed. It
seems to be a visious circle and I spend more time waiting on the scanning
that getting work done. I have windows XP and cable modem.
Any help would be truly appreciated!
