I have recently installed Windows XP on my laptop and have applied all the
necessary Hotfixes and Service packs. However it is behaving very strangely. When the laptop is booted, the majority of the standard services that are set to start automatically do not start. Because one of the services that does not start is the "Event Log" there is no record of the 'boot sequence' and therefore no way to find out why the services are not starting. I can manually start all the services and the machine functions correctly after this. I have even tried booting in "Safe Mode" and "Safe Mode with Networking", to see if the Event Log service is started, but it is not. I have checked the newsgroup archives and have seen a few postings on this issue, but no solutions. Does any one have any ideas what the problem might be? Or even suggest a method of loging the boot process? The list of Automatic services that do not start are as follows: Application Management Ati HotKey Poller Themes DHCP Client DNS Client Help and Support Automatic Updates Computer Browser Cryptographic Services Distributed Link Tracking Client Event Log Error Reporting Service IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service IPSEC Services Logical Disk Manager Print Spooler Protected Storage Secondary Logon Security Accounts Manager Security Center Server Shell Hardware Detection System Event Notification System Restore Service Task Scheduler TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper WebClient Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) Windows Installer Windows Management Instrumentation Windows Time Wireless Zero Configuration Workstation Thanks, Will |

That seemed to sort out the service problem. I have filed away the 'information' that you provided in case I need it in the future. Regards, Will |
