If I purchase a license for XP Professional via my VL agreement, does that
not include one CAL for Windows 2000/2003 Server (basic file/print services)?

That is ludicrus. Why else would I buy a Windows XP Professional machine if
I'm not going to connect it to a Windows Server? Why doesn't it include it in
the cost of the license of XP?

I guess that also means that if I have a license for Outlook 2003 and an
Exchange 2003 server that I will also need an additional CAL for that?

Yes you will need an Exchange CAL.


Look no one is forcing you to use MS products. If you don't like their rules
you are totally free to go with Linux or something else.

If it's a small network (<=10 users) you can use a desktop-version of
Windows as the 'server' (with the exception of XP Home which isn't so
suitable) and in that case you don't need CALs.

Should perhaps add that you can't run Exchange that way, though.
