I have a computer with two operating systems on two drives: d: is a full install of Win98se and c: is a full install of WinXPhome. When I finally let SP2 install itself, the keyboard (any keystroke) became fatal to the system operation. No keystroke registers on the screen, the mouse is frozen, but I can move the cursor with a serial tablet. The mouse and keyboard are PS/2. I know the hardware is solid because everything works when I boot Win98se. The keyboard works when I use it to choose to boot WinXPhome. I have substituted a second keyboard with the same results. The device manager informs me that the standard PS/2 keyboard driver is busted. It will not let me roll the driver back, and cannot find a better driver to install. Uninstalling the keyboard and rebooting does not help, even in safe mode. My OS install CD is apparently useless now that SP2 is in charge. I assume the standard PS/2 driver is corrupt, but I do not know where to find or how to install a replacement. I have a more advanced system running WinXPpro available for downloading and porting things over to the crippled computer by diskette. The only interaction with the crippled OS is through the serial tablet/stylus setup. How to proceed? |
