I decided that it was time to clean and reinstall XP on my wife's computer.
It is a AMD XP3000, 512MB, Nforce2 Mobo, Geforce FX5500, 40GB HDD, CD, Dlink DWL-G520(ver.B) I installed XP pro but I have 2 annoying problems and some oddities. When I try to sign in to MSN messenger 7.5 I get an error message stating that MSN messenger has encountered problems signing in, please troubleshoot. I have tried everything to get it to sign in but it keeps on failing on the Key ports part. I am confident that this is a symptom of some other problem. When I try to activate Office 2003 it just errors out with a message that I am not connected to the internet. But I can get to the web and other programs update fine. I ran SFC /scannow and it looked like some files were replaced but still my issues remain. I ran “netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt” No change. I also removed and reinstalled the Dlink drivers, trying various versions. I have uninstalled all software firewalls and even disabled my hardware firewall for a short time as a troubleshooting step. I ran all the updates from Microsoft update including SP2 for windows and office. I removed MSN messenger and IE and outlook express and tied to reinstall but I keep no getting an error message saying that a later version of IE is already on the system and it exits. Oh my Dlink Wifi card does not act normal. I can not put a finger on it. And under device manager my processor is listed as an AMD Athlon Prusser ???? I have an Idea that I had the BIOS tuned too tightly when I did the install and inadvertently the installation was not a success. I changed my memory timing to one step back from where the system becomes unstable. I was wondering if anyone has a comment on this. I am planning to reinstall tonight, with the BIOS settings back to the normal settings and removing my Dlink card before the reformat too. If anyone was brave enough to read through this, I’ll post an update after the reload. L8R |

Well after setting the BIOS to the defaults and reloading Windows XP
everything is fine. So remember to set your tweaked PC back to normal settings before a reload.
