Default Boot and System partition on different drives

After reinstalling windows XP, by removing the C:\ partition and creating it
again, the D:\ partition contains the BOOT.INI, NTLDR, NTDETECT (became
active and the system partition after my reinstall of C:\). I used the
diskmanager of XP (via the original XP installation) My D:\ Partition is
empty except for the bootstrap files. C:\ contains the \Windows folder and
all my programs and document and settings...

I want to move those bootfiles to the C:\ partition, where they use to be
anyway.

I installed the recoveryconsole, and tried FIXBOOT C: but that didnt work.
Neither did FIXMBR. It looks like that the partitions are renumbered, but the
driveletters arent.

Furthermore (just as a note) the installed RC says in BOOT.INI thats its on
the C partition, but in fact its in the D: partition.

Anyway, all is stable and working fine, but i just want to have a D
partition for data only. How can i solve this (tiny) problem?

Regards Tim

Default RE: Boot and System partition on different drives

Hello Tim,
First is C drive a Primary Drive or an Extended drive?
It has to be a Primary drive.
Use Disk Managment and check whether it primary or Extended.
( Right-Click My computer, Manage, Disk Management)
If it primary, it needs to be set as the active partition( in Disk
Management right-click on volume choose Set as Active)
NTLDR, NTDetect.com and boot.ini need to copied to the C drive as well.

To be safe you may want to generate a boot floppy.
Copy NTLDR, Ntdectect.com and the boot.ini to a formatted floppy.
Try booting to that to make sure you can boot Windows as precaution, in
case some of the changes affect the boot process.
Thanks,

Default RE: Boot and System partition on different drives

Hi and thank you for your answer.

My D:\ is the primary partition and C:\ is a logical drive.

Maybe it´s easier to wipe the disk and do it al over again, i´ve tried the
solution you mentioned only ending up to not be able to boot at all.

Thanks again.

Tim
