Default installing xp home edition

I'M TRYING TO INSTALL XP HOME EDITION TO REPLACE WINDOWS 98, SAVING MY
EXISTING FILES.DURING THE INSTALLATION, I GET AN ERROR MESSAGE:MISSING
FILE:ERROR COPYING USETUP.EXE TO C:\$WIN_NT$.~LS\i386\SYSTEMS32\SMSS.EXE. ANY
HELP IN EXPLAINING WHAT TO DO WOULD BE APPRECIATED.

Why not use file transfer in 98,save youre data to a cd,then install xp cd,
restart computer, set to boot to xp cd,select install xp,delete the
partition (98),
create one, then xp will format and do a clean installation.XP doesnt need any
98 files, plus 98 runs in FAT32 file system whereas xp runs in (or
should-default)
ntfs file system.

Please do not type in all caps. This is very difficult to read and is
considered to be very rude ( you are yelling! ).

Check the CD isn't damaged. Then copy all your files to a CD or floppies.
Then reboot the machine from the XP CD, and when prompted, select to do a
FULL INSTALL. When the install's finished, you can copy the files back.
You'll have to reinstall your programs, though. Hope this helps anyway.
