Upgrade from 98SE to XPH: no coms ports & can't install modem

PC is Gateway Neo with all USB. It's at the minimum end of requirements for
XPH. I had originally reformatted and recovered W98 but gave up and (someone
else) has installed XPH. Works fine. I can install the modem (Motorola
SM56ACL) to the point where I select COM ports but there are none displayed.
I can install a port but it always comes up as having a problem. I know the
driver for the modem needs updating. I've a suspicion that my formatting (I
did it in DOS) has dome something.

Go to the Motorola web site and download the latest XP drivers for the
modem. Boot into XP, open Device Manager and delete any and all instances of
the modem, reboot, when XP starts it should find new hardware and you can
then point to the location of the drivers you downloaded.
