Default XP SP2 slipstreamed setup/install resets PC.

Here is what I am trying to accomplish:

Reinstall (or repair install) of XP SP2 on my desktop PC.

It goes through the setup process, and while it is installing devices, the
computer eventually undergoes a freeze/restart. No stop message is recorded
on the screen, and I hear a cracking through the speakers.

XP has been installed on this machine before, using a similarly slipstreamed
CD. I know this because the XP master CD's I have all detect the drive at
around 136GB.

Hardware I have installed: (I'm not sure I can get to less than this...)

ATI Radeon 6800.
Maxtor 300GB HDD. (Partitioned out, XP install partition is 40GB)
Maxell 16XDVD-R (or HP 9100 CD-RW, switching it doesn't help!)
Shuttle XPC S45N Motherboard/PC (Nvidia nForce 2 chipset)
Xerox LCD Display. (Forget the exact model number.)

I have a HP 640e DVD-RW that's disconnected from the main computer, as well
as my printer.

Now is there a way to pin down which driver is causing the computer to
freeze and reboot in Setup?
I'm most suspicious about the unified Nvidia nForce2 drivers/motherboard,
but I've booted the system in another OS, and that works fine.

When I get home I can post the setup logs from c:\windows\, if that will
help, but the last driver I see in them is the ATI 9800 Drivers, and the
video does flicker and then goes back away again.

Thanks for any help in advance.
- Greg.

Youre going about it wrong by trying to "repair" in IE.You should install xp
cd,
exit the info page, restart computer, boot to xp cd,at xp cd boot screen
select,
install xp,repair this copy,or install new copy,delete the partition,create
one,
then xp will reformat and install auto.

Sorry, Andrew:

Maybe I mistyped, but I've tried both a repair instal and deleting the
partition and recreating with a fresh install to it.

Both get the same result of what I described above. Monitor goes to no
signal, crackling from the speakers, and eventually, reboot.

I'll post logs when I get home.

(Unless anyone has specific log requests...?)

Apparently this was the culprit. I've since put a better set of drivers into
my Windows XP SP2 CD and now the install doesn't crash and reboot.

What is "this" - i.e. *what* was the culprit?

It was apparently the Nforce motherboard drivers. (Audio, Ethernet, IDE,
GART, and some sort of memory controller)

I used nLite to replace the drivers, and installed (successfully) onto a
different partition, without the snap, crackle, reboot problem.

I think it's related to the same problem some people have had with drivers
being (incorrectly) replaced because the signing wasn't completely correct,
but I couldn't swear to this.
