After virus infection I thought the best I could do is reinstall Windows.
I did have te product key on the machine so I started the setup. Apparently I used the wrong CD so the wasn't the right one for this CD. I can't boot the machine so I don't know for sure which XP version etc. I don't have the original CD. Any chances of getting to know which version of XP I do need? The Product Key label on the machine tells me: Windows XP Professional 1- 2CPU HPQ I tried some borrewed CD's of a friend of mine, with no succes! Need to know if it is a SP2 product key OEM product key etc. |

Don't be.. The CD Key is stuck to your machine - not a nice CD case. It's OEM. -- Shenan Stanley MS-MVP -- How To Ask Questions The Smart Way http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html |

The OEM Product Key affixed to your PC is only
valid with your PC manufacturer's recommended Windows XP recovery method. You'll need to contact them for assistance. -- Carey Frisch Microsoft MVP Windows - Shell/User Microsoft Community Newsgroups news://msnews.microsoft.com/ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Bert" wrote: | After virus infection I thought the best I could do is reinstall Windows. | I did have te product key on the machine so I started the setup. | Apparently I used the wrong CD so the wasn't the right one for this CD. | I can't boot the machine so I don't know for sure which XP version etc. | I don't have the original CD. | | Any chances of getting to know which version | of XP I do need? Shenan Stanley wrote: > Also - what type of computer is it (Name Brand / Model)? Bert wrote: > Compaq Evo N1020V > > (and i'm not sure if it was OEM or not) It is an OEM - 99.999% sure. If this Operating System (Windows XP) came installed on the Compaq - then there is no doubt left it was an OEM. Compaq may or may not have provided an actual Windows XP CD - but must have provided some way to restore to "shipping status". That way would be explained in the manuals and such that shipped with the machine. It could have been a Windows XP CD, a "restoration/recovery" CD/DVD set, a "restoration/recovery" partition or various other methods. However - the sticker on the machine - if it has a CD key - is for an OEM version of Windows XP. -- Shenan Stanley MS-MVP -- How To Ask Questions The Smart Way http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html |
