I have 20 Dell Ispiron LTs that I would like to re-image using RIS.
Can I use the original Product Keys or do I have to have a Volume License? |

What license do you have? You can use both, DELL installations have OEM pre
activated and you can get images to work using imaging but .... You do not have imaging rights with an OEM license ...as far a I know. So if you have VL at your comapy use those media "Michael" <Michael@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news 5EDBFA1-AEDA-4F9B-8173-4A95F057AB2F@microsoft.com...>I have 20 Dell Ispiron LTs that I would like to re-image using RIS. > Can I use the original Product Keys or do I have to have a Volume License? |

I have the original OEM Licenses that came with the Dell LTs. After I re-image them using RIS I'm prompted for Activation which It won't accept the OEM licenses and I have to call MS. If I purchase a limited number of VLs can I use those with my LTs that already have OEM licenses or would that be illegal? |

I'm afraid that would be illegal. OEM licensed software can be upgraded to
Volume Licensed software only within 3 months of bying it with your hardware. A VLK will not work on installation that where done using none VLK media, so it would not even work. I'm not a licensing expert but I have worked for a company that had a couple of 100O DELL PC's OEM XP and they did image a factory image (not and self build/adapted image with office added or anything else) to use in case of HD crashes etc ... If that is legal, I don't know (they talk about "imaging rights" and I do not know how that is interpreted) ... but we did manage to get the activation in order. Did you use the original Dell XP CD? I use VLK licensing now combined with RIS. Yes I used the Dell XP CD but I would like to be able to re-image them
without have to contact MS each time. I'm just going to buy a VLK. Thanks, I really appreciate you help. "WorkingHard" wrote: > I'm afraid that would be illegal. Perhaps some good legal news for you! found it on google
http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/d.../reimaging.doc What we found out is if you have an Volume license agreement with Microsoft, either open or select (I believe there are others) you can use your volumn license media and key to create the RIS image and the OEM license will keep you legal. So as long as you have an OEM license for every pc you can use the volumn media to create a RIS image that you can load on all your OEM pcs. Since I work for State Government our state has an open license agreement with Microsoft and all we had to do is join the agreement. For others I don't know how you get an agreement with Microsoft. I hope this information helps if you have any questions feel free to email me at "Michael" <Michael@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:E3B02154-D285-48F4-8736-F8A2D0BF66D1@microsoft.com... > Yes I used the Dell XP CD but I would like to be able to re-image them > without have to contact MS each time.
