Hi! I have a SONY VGCRB53 desktop computer with pre-installed winxp home +
SP2. I cannot upgrade to winxp professional (without SP1/2) without a clean installation. SONY support site says "Upgrading from Microsoft® Windows® XP Home Edition with Service Pack 1 (SP1) or Service Pack 2 (SP2) to Professional Edition without SP1 or SP2 is not supported. Contact Microsoft for a CD containing the Microsoft® Windows® XP Professional Edition operating system with the appropriate Service Pack. " But I couldn't find a way to "contact" microsoft without paying $45CAD. Is there any way I can upgrade for free?? (I do not have a winxp professional disk with any SPs) thanks! |

You need a "Retail Version", and not an "OEM Version",
of Windows XP Professional, in order to "Upgrade". All you need to do is make a SP2 slipstreamed version of your current Windows XP Pro, then use the new CD to perform a "Upgrade". How to Perform a Windows XP Repair Install http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm Either one of the following utilities makes slipstreaming (integrating) SP2 into Windows XP a breeze: Windows Slipstreaming and Bootable CD Guide http://www.msfn.org/articles.php?act...showarticle=49 or AutoStreamer 1.0.33 (preferred) http://www.wbeta.com/comments.php?shownews=1063&catid=2 Windows XP Service Pack 2 - Direct Download http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en -- Carey Frisch Microsoft MVP Windows - Shell/User Microsoft Community Newsgroups news://msnews.microsoft.com/ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "MELPOMENE" wrote: | Hi! Disreguard what carrie fisk mvp is telling you,she's wrong....With youre xp cd
pro,install the cd,exit the info page,restart computer,boot the pc to the xp cd, at boot menu screen select,install xp,new copy,delete the partition (xp home), create one,then let xp pro format and do a clean installation.Carrie fisk is attempting you to install pro over home,its not advisable as to how microsoft reccomends the install of home to pro... Andrew;
Please read the OPs post again. The OP wants to UPGRADE and not Clean Installation as you suggest Perhaps the OP wants to keep data and settings which your plan destroys.. Upgrading from Windows XP Home to Pro is advised by Microsoft and usually has no problems unlike previous operating systems. Wherever you got the information that it is not advisable, it is not from Microsoft. There is at least one other error in your post, but I leave that to you. -- Jupiter Jones [MVP] http://www3.telus.net/dandemar http://www.dts-l.org "Andrew E." <eckrichco@msn.com> wrote in message news:580770A9-C099-475D-A611-3BB431982304@microsoft.com... > Disreguard what carrie fisk mvp is telling you,she's wrong....With youre > xp cd > pro,install the cd,exit the info page,restart computer,boot the pc to the > xp cd, > at boot menu screen select,install xp,new copy,delete the partition (xp > home), > create one,then let xp pro format and do a clean installation.Carrie fisk > is > attempting you to install pro over home,its not advisable as to how > microsoft > reccomends the install of home to pro... |

Andrew E is a newsgroup menace, do not follow his malicious advice. All you need is the Pro upgrade and Microsoft has a web page that lists it as a valid upgrade path. Andrew E has been asked many times to produce his documentation where Microsoft says not to upgrade. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/h...ing/matrix.asp -- Michael Stevens MS-MVP XP xpnews@bogusmichaelstevenstech.com http://www.michaelstevenstech.com For a better newsgroup experience.
