Default Required to reactivate XP, now htpps doesn't work in IE

This morning XP would not allow me to log on. It said I needed to activate
XP. I activated it 2 years ago! I went through the phone activation (no
probs, thank goodness!) and got logged on. However, all is not well.
Internet Explorer will not find 'https' pages. FireFox has no problem with
them.

Why did I get the 'activate windows' message? (I have not made any hardware
changes in forever, and it worked yesterday) Why has IE stopped working?

I am using SP2.
