i have a dell dimension 1100, iam trying to install windows xp home for the
first time. I am already running windows xp home. I want to :- 1) Format my hard drive clean and 2) Re install windows xp from my dell operating system cd. I inserted the cd and was going well ..but til it was asking me which partition to install the operating system in. i click on c: (c drive) and it said that this partition already has a operating system and if i press enter then it will continue. I wanted to know if it is safe to go ahead with that. If there is anything else then please tell me because iam having severe problems with my computer . Please reply asap cheers |

You need to boot from the CD and start setup. It will then give you the
choice to delete - recreate then format the partitions before installing. Make sure you have the necessary drivers to get you on the Internet again so if you need to download drivers you can. hth DDS W 2k MVP MCSE "hasnain mir mohammed" <hasnainmirmohammed@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:6B585E73-AB5B-44BC-93E1-791E8DBB325E@microsoft.com... > i have a dell dimension 1100, iam trying to install windows xp home for > the > first time. > I am already running windows xp home. > I want to :- > 1) Format my hard drive clean and > 2) Re install windows xp from my dell operating system cd. > > I inserted the cd > and was going well ..but til > it was asking me which partition to install the operating system in. > i click on c: (c drive) and it said that this partition already has a > operating system and if i press enter then it will continue. > I wanted to know if it is safe to go ahead with that. > If there is anything else then please tell me because iam having severe > problems with my computer . > Please reply > asap > cheers |

In your original post you stated:
"1) Format my hard drive clean and" .. If there it detects an operating system on C, you have not formatted the C drive > but there is another operating system already installed > it says > so should i go ahead with that and will it be safe ? You *can* go ahead and install but this is not a "clean" install. It's more of a reinstall. A reinstall may or may not fix the problems that caused you to try to install the Operating system again. If you boot from the XP CD (Put the XP CD in and re start and choose "boot from CD" when presented) you will be able to format the C partition (removes the existing Operating system) and install XP on the C drive without encountering the error about "another Operating system is already installed." hth DDS W 2k MVP MCSE "hasnain mir mohammed" <hasnainmirmohammed@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:EB6742B4-6BB6-456B-B8C0-A59F7BA2703D@microsoft.com... > > > "Danny Sanders" wrote: > >> You need to boot from the CD and start setup.
