Default "The file 'asms' on Windows XP Professional CD-ROM is needed"

I've been running WinXP Pro sp2 for over a year now with no problems until
the other day when my kid tells me the computer won't boot up. I'm trying to
do a Repair install from my old WinXP Pro disk and I'm getting the above
error. My pc at work can read the disk just fine. I don't find an asms
file, but there's an asms folder with subfolders and files and my work pc has
no trouble reading all that. So I think the disk is okay.

I found article 311755 suggesting that I try loading the xcopy utility onto
my pc from an old Win98 sp2 disk or a WinME disk, but I don't have either of
those. I don't have a spare cd drive laying around either. What else can I
try? My wife will kill me if I lose all her digital pictures!

You can try making a SP2 slipstreamed version of your
current Windows XP, then use the new CD to perform a
"Repair Install".

Either one of the following utilities makes slipstreaming
(integrating) SP2 into Windows XP a breeze:

or

AutoStreamer 1.0.33 (preferred)
