ethernet controller driver gone after upgrade from 2000 to xp prof

I recently upgraded a user computer (dell dimension 2400) from 2000 to xp
prof and can no longer access the internet. I downloaded nic drivers (all of
them!) from the resource disk (didn't work), re-installed windows xp, looked
on the internet for other drivers and loaded them (didn't work). Still
showing a yellow ? for ethernet controller in device manager. Properties on
network place is a blank screen, unable to connect to domain. Please help!
I've done plenty of upgrades, but never had this problem before. Thanks.

Did you check for BIOS / Driver updates from here?

> Thanks for your reply. These downloads require a floppy drive, which is not available on the pc. The machine has a cd and a dvd drive(s). I ended up scrubbing and reloading, which unfortunately made it worse. Now there are 4 drivers that are unavailable: ethernet controller, multimedia audio controller, sm bus controller, video controller. Since I'm unable to access the internet using the problem machine, I'm unable to download drivers directly, but I can download to cd r/w disk. Any other suggestions? Thanks again.
