Default Free simple video editing software

Are there any free video editing software out there that are easy to use? I
need a video editor that can do simple things like taking a vcd .dat file and
splitting it into smaller segments so I can burn them into 2 or more separate
CD-Rs / CD-RWs. I would also need to cut out/trim some scenes or rearrange
the sequnce of the video in the VCD. I do not need advanced features like
special effects etc.

There are quite a number of video editors out there but most of the free
stuff are not very user-friendly especially to beginners. I am currently
trying to use VirtualDub. It is quite good and it does have all the features
I am looking for. Unfortunately, the interface is not very easy to use and it
can only save the edited file in .avi which takes up a lot of hd space for
large video files.

Not really. With Vdub, you should click on the Video tab and select
"Full Processing Mode". Then, again click the Video tab and select
Compression, where you can specify the type of compression you want for
your output. If you install DivX or FFDSHOW, for example, you can
create your AVI using MPEG4 compression, which can result in relatively
small files, depending on selected bitrates, etc. FFDSHOW is a good all
around product that will handle just about any compression you are
likely to encounter.
